In 1956, while prolific Procter & Gamble researcher Vic Mills baby-sat for his newborn grandson, he developed an understandable dislike for changing and washing cloth diapers. An idea was born! Back at the P&G laboratories, he assigned a group to research the possibility and practicality of a diaper that was absorbent, provided leakage protection, and kept babies dry—and could be discarded after use. After extensive research, formulations, and trials, Pampers was created, as was a new product category. Pampers was launched in 1961 in the U.S. While the first "paper" disposable diapers were sold in the 1930s, they were not much more than a paper pad placed inside a cloth diaper, and they filled a very small niche market. The original diapers were mainly used for traveling. Pampers was different—its first design was absorbent paper attached to plastic backing (adhesive tapes and elastic leg gathers were yet to come). The product was expanded nationally in Canada in 1972.
