Emergency Relief

P&G provides PUR Purifier of Water to global relief agencies, including UNICEF, the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, AmeriCares, Samaritan's Purse, CARE, Population Services International, Save the Children, World Vision, and others so they can provide drinking water in emergency situations. PUR has been used in more than 40 countries and more than 1 billion liters of purified water have been provided. P&G makes PUR available at cost to international relief groups.

The PUR packets have been shown to be effective in responding to cholera outbreaks, for refugees in complex emergency situations, and for providing water during emergencies such as floods and earthquakes.

The PUR packets have been shown to be particularly effective to help people live positively with HIV/AIDS because safe drinking water is critical in order to stay healthy. The PUR packets remove chlorine resistant parasites including Cryptosporidium and Giardia as well as kill bacteria and viruses.

Independent monitoring of PUR during emergencies by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Johns Hopkins University School of Public Health, CARE, Aquaya Institute, and AmeriCares has shown that it can be a practical way to provide emergency drinking water. The monitoring has shown that PUR is practical, well accepted, and reduces diarrheal illness.
